Happy Fei Gets The First Slice Of His Beautiful Birthday Cake.

Birthday cakes can be soft sponge cakes and creamy, or cakes full of sultannas and currants, and topped with white sugar icing, like the birthday cake given to me at the beginning of the year. Both types of birthday cakes are usually beautifully decorated to suit the individual occasion. We were in our hotel room at Dengfeng looking at a program on television and drinking Chinese tea, when a friend came into the room and said, 'Quick, get ready, we are going to Fei's birthday party!' Who were we to disobey! Suitably attired we left the hotel to walk down the streets to the restaurant, on the way passing street cafes and snackbars, serving their customers at tables, or with snacks to takeaway. Finding the restaurant where the birthday party was to be held presented a problem, so the mobile phones were put to good use, 'How do we get to the restaurant?', 'Where are you now?' 'By the snack bars in the street.' 'OK! Turn left at the next junction, and it is the third restaurant on your left' We eventually got to the restaurant and were escorted to the room where Fei, his parents, and grand-parents were waiting.

Fei opened his birthday presents, and then, when we were all seated at the round table, the waitors and waitresses started to bring in the food and wine which they placed on the center turntable. Fei said, 'Where's my birthday cake?' so his Mum told him to be patient for the birthday cake would not be brought into the room until everyone had finished their dinner. I dont think that moment came soon enough for Fei. The waitresses having cleared the table at the end of the dinner, brought in the Birthday Cake and placed it on the table in front of Fei. His face lit up with a big smile and his eyes gleamed with delight; the Birthday Cake was beautifully decorated and it seemed a pity that most of it would soon be eaten! Mum placed eight red birthday candles in their holders on the cake, then the room lights were turned off while Mum and Fei's uncle lit the candles, all soon blown out by Fei. Back came on the room lights and the first slice of the Birthday Cake was given to the very happy Fei.

Funny Birthday Cake, Birthday Cards And Presents For Fei's Uncle.

The previous year, Fei's uncle also had a birthday cake, but it was more of a funny birthday cake than the special, beautifully decorated cake, that Fei was to enjoy so much. Uncle was in Wales for a few weeks during which time he had his birthday, well away from his family and home. My family and friends gave me birthday cards for him to have on his special day, and I bought a cake. Picture of uncle blowing out one candle on his funny birthday cake, after coming back from work. Not a special birthday cake, but just a fruit cake on which I put one candle and holder, and around the cake a band of colored paper on which was written, 'Happy Birthday'!

When Fei's uncle came back from work, he was blindfolded and led to the sitting room, to sit on a chair. On the table before him were his birthday cards, a few birthday presents, and his funny birthday cake with the flame on the one and only candle flickering in front of him. This is what he saw when his blindfold was removed! Of course he was surprised and happy that his birthday had been remembered.
