Pictures Of Building Work At The Shaolin Temple.

The building construction pictures shown on this page were taken at the Shaolin Temple, Henan Province in June 2004. The building construction was being carried out in connection with an application for the Shaolin Temple to be accepted as a World Heritage Site.

New building construction has meant that some of the older buildings have been demolished, and in the process has been revealed some indication of the methods of construction of the original building work.

Many improvements are being made during the construction work, with improved facilities for monks and visitors. Where old halls have been demolished and replaced with new halls, the work has been completed, where possible, using the same building construction methods used when the original hall was built. Many of the construction jobs where machinery would be used in the modern world, were completed using hand tools.

The hand tools used by the workers might well have been the same type as used by their forebears. The bark from very large tree trunks, to be used as beams or pillars in the construction of the halls, was removed by a worker using a long handled axe type tool. He was obviously a very experience worker, but the method appeared extremely dangerous to the onlooker.

Building construction work included methods still in use, such as post and beam framework of new halls. The post and beam work at the Shaolin Temper may have different in that the joints were all of tongue and groove. No nails, metal bars, or other metal products appeared to have been used.

To see larger copies of pictures of the building construction, click the images below which will open in new windows. There are 30 photographs of the construction work to be seen, from thumbnail photos on five pages.

*** BUILDING CONSTRUCTION:
Building construction is the process of adding structure to real property. The vast majority of building construction projects are small renovations, such as addition of a room, or renovation of a bathroom. Often, the owner of the property acts as laborer, paymaster, and design team for the entire project. However, all building construction projects include some elements in common - design, financial, and legal considerations. *** SRC: Wikipeddia.Org
