Red facing bricks and terracotta tiles for floors made by Ruabon Brick and Terracotta Co.Ltd.; pictures, circa 1955. Ruabon Brick terracotta floor tiles and red pressed facing bricks were manufactured from clay marl excavated from claypit. Ruabon bricks and tiles were sold throughout the UK and exported abroad, including Canada and America. Workers making the bricks and tiles were local people, some starting work at the brickworks as soon as they left school. The terracotta floor tiles were mainly of two sizes, 6 inch square and 9 inch square. The bricks produced by the Ruabon Brickworks were of standard size, 9 x 4.5 inches. The types of bricks were wirecuts or pressed facing bricks, in red or brown colors.

Making Facing Bricks and Floor Tiles at Ruabon; Pictures Taken About 1955.

Pictures from a Different Age

A nostalgic look at what used to be, in the few pictures that have survived the many changes through the years. Ruabon red facing bricks and terracotta floor tiles were manufactured by the Ruabon Brick and Terracotta Co.Ltd., for which they were well known. The Bricks and Tiles made by the family owned business were sold throughout the UK, and were also exported. The pictures of the workers and the process of making the bricks and tiles shown in these pages were taken in the 1950's. The claypit is now a landfill site and the brickworks site is now a trading estate.
