Return Visit To Shaolin Temple After Improvement Work. Ginkgo Trees In Autumn Colors At Entrance

[Page 13 Shaolin Changes]

Photo shows autumn colors of leaves on Gingko trees near entrance to Shaolin Temple. During our last visit to the Shaolin Temple many alterations were being done in the grounds, by knocking down some existing halls, and walls, and building new halls in their place. On this visit it was going to be very interesting to see what the Temple Grounds looked like after so much work had been completed.

Zhong Guang and I travelled down by train from Beijing to Zhengzhou, a short journey of about five hours in comparision with other train journeys, and at the station we were met by Xing Du and one of his students, whom I later named Andrew, because I did not seem to say his Chinese name correctly! Andrew would be one of my 'keepers' during the five days we would be spending at the Shaolin Temple. It was of course autumn at the time of our visit, so we were lucky to see the Ginkgo Trees in their splendid colours, and the photo on the left was taken from inside the Temple Grounds.

Photo shows group of visitors to Shaolin Temple with raincoats provided by Temple on rainy day. The weather during our visit was rather cold despite the shining sun, but one day the rain came to plague us. It was also the very day that Xing Du had a group of visitors to show around the grounds. The Temple staff were well prepared for such weather, as all the visitors were given plastic hooded coats to wear, and Xing Du carried an umbrella. In the photo on the right the group is being told about the large iron cauldron that is near the Library Hall. It is in the cauldron that the Monks of long ago used to cook their food. These days the process has been modernised.

New Restaurant At Shaolin Temple Provides Improved Service For Visitors

Photo shows tables and chairs in new restaurant at the Shaolin Temple. Even visitors to the Temple now have a new restaurant available in the grounds, and it is here that we usually had our lunch and dinner. Previously, we would go out of the Temple grounds to a restaurant nearby for our meals.

Picture of dinner tray of vegetarian food served at restaurant in Shaolin Temple. In the Temple restaurant the food was brought to us on trays, all five identical as far as the dishes were concerned, rice, vegetables, beans, nuts, all delicious! I did not want my bowl of rice, so one of the boys made use of it, and it was quickly gone!
