The Oriental Pearl Tower near the Huangpo River in Shanghai is said to be the third tallest building in the world. When we arrived at the Oriental Riverside Hotel where we would be staying during our visit to Shanghai, it was impossible to miss the sight of the Oriental Pearl Tower, and of course we were eager to get to the top of it. Whenever we walked past the entrance to the tower, there always seemed to be a long queue of people waiting for their turn to get to the top of the tower. The tour groups had arrived in coaches parked nearby, so the Oriental Tower was clearly one of the star attractions of any visit to the Pudong area of Shanghai.

This photo of the Oriental Tower was taken after we had been to have dinner at another new development near our hotel, a very tall block of shops and restaurants. Two floors of this massive building was devoted to different foods, raw, tinned, cooked or preserved! We had our dinner in a 'vegetarian restaurant', and two of the dishes served to us were of 'roast beef' and 'ducks feet'. Of course they were only made to look and taste like these two items, but why would vegetarians want to be reminded of these two animal and bird dishes? It was all very puzzling!

When we were walking back to the hotel the Oriental Pearl Tower, with all its lights, looked like a blazing torch or a lighthouse, as a warning for the passing boats and ships on the nearby Huangpo River. We were able to view the Oriental Pearl Tower from outside our hotel, and from the top of the tower, we were able to see the Oriental Riverside Hotel !
