Nanning Green City: View From Top Of Tallest Building In Nanning.

From the grounds of the Exhibition Hall in Nanning could be seen the tallest building in this Green City, and from the top of this highest building, it could be seen why it is said that Nanning is a city in China that is changing very rapidly. We used the lifts in this tallest Nanning building to go up to two observation decks at different levels. At the first level we enjoyed the views of Nanning whilst sitting at a table by a window and enjoying a cup of coffee, and through the window we could see the Exhibition Hall in the distance, that we had previously visited. There was a different sensation to experience when we used a second lift to get to the top deck. From this top deck of the building there was an unobstructed view of the city around us, and at one part of the deck, the floor was of glass, on which you could stand and observe the traffic and people below, although the images were very, very small !

A great deal had changed since our first visit to Nanning in 1990, when there was hardly any motor traffic on the roads, and only a hint that soon the tower blocks would start to sprout up like mushrooms overnight. There was a variety of such tower blocks to be seen from the top of the highest building, and many of these would have been apartment blocks owned by local people. When I first stayed in a friend's apartment in Nanning, I was not only impressed with the apartment itself, but also with the estate in which it was located.

In Nanning, as in Beijing, the housing estates in which we have stayed during our visits to China, had been carefully planned. A large courtyard in the estates, was an area in which people met to do Tai Chi exercises, to play with their children, to sit and chat, to walk their dogs, so it encouraged a community spirit, in the same way as is common in the old Chinese hutongs.
